Relationships – Change of
Heart
‘Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he
will not depart from it.’ Proverbs : Chapter 22, verse 6
Our relationship with others determines the activities of our life
for eg. the success and harmony of our marriage and family life or a promotion in a job.
Some of the most rewarding and challenging relationships can be
those with family members, especially between parents and children.
See Ephesians
6:1-4. ‘Children, obey
your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour your father and mother which is the first commandment with
promise. That it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. And you fathers do not provoke your
children to wrath but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.’
if we read and meditate on these verses, we will know how to live
with our family in a Godly manner whether it is a husband and wife, or a parent and a child relationship. If you
are an adult, this will guide you on how you can honour your parents. If you are a parent, it will guide you to
raise your children according to God’s principles.
There are five keys for a strong relationship
Communication
Honesty
Encouragement
Giving
Listening
Discuss how you can use the above keys to build a strong
relationship
Relationships can be maintained only if we change from being
carnal minded to spiritual minded. ‘For to be carnally minded is : death, but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace.’ Romans 8: 6
As parents, we can raise our children in the right way only if we
ourselves are spiritually minded and are standing on the foundation of the Word of God with firm faith in Jesus
Christ.
2 Timothy
3:15 – ‘And that from
childhood you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is
in Christ Jesus.’
Some questions to reflect on :
How would you describe your relationship with your family
members and the people you work with ?
Has trying to change your spouse of some other close friend
ever cause more problems in relationships.
Of the five keys mentioned earlier, which one has been the
biggest hurdle to overcome ?
Prayer
: Father, we pray that we learn what is pleasing to you
and that our lives is a constant proof of the things that are most acceptable to you.
